Red Ribbon Week

October 2, 2008 09:56 by Terek

Red Ribbon Week is an annual campaign which began in honor of a former DEA Agent named Enrique Camarena who was tortured and killed while investigating a major Mexican drug cartel in 1985.  Camarena had served in the U.S. Marines and was a police officer before eventually deciding to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.  His mother, very concerned for his safety, tried to talk him out it; however, Camarena believed that he could and would make a difference.  Ultimately, the fight to make a difference would claim Camarena's life, nonetheless, his bravery and commitment was not forgotten.  In honor of Camarena's memory friends and neighbors began to wear red badges of satin.  Out of his neighborhood an outpour of support turned into an organized community response which targeted a message of prevention in order to eliminate the demand for illegal drugs.  The California State PTA adopted the Red Ribbon Campaign and in 1988, Red Ribbon Week was recognized nationally with President Ronald and First Lady Nancy Reagan serving as the Honorary Chairpersons.  As we perchance remember friends or family lost to us due to drug addiction or drug related violence we can utilize Red Ribbon Week to promote the virtues of a drug free society.  Conceivably, we can encourage co-workers, friends, family, and neighbors to unite with us in the fight against drugs by providing red awareness bracelets, t-shirts, caps, or a red pen which can be worn or used throughout the entire week.
