Michael Jolly Graphic Designer
About Me: I was born in Bayside, Queens, NY. I grew up in Franklin Square, moved to Smithtown when I was about 9, went to college at the University at Buffalo, and currently live back in Smithtown. At Buffalo I began studying Architecture but soon changed to Communication with a focus on Graphic Design. Towards the end of my college career I took part in 3 graphic design internships to further my graphic design skills and experience; my favorite of which was working at NBC in New York City. I was not paid for this internship (just reimbursed for travel expenses which, for anyone living around NYC understands can be well over $200 a month) but it was still the best internship I have ever had. The only disappointments in the job were (1) 30 Rockefeller Center is an over 40 story building and I worked on the second floor and (2) I had to leave when my internship was completed. Now I'm moving around in Motivators to pursue my Graphic Design career and very much enjoy where I am.
During my free time I enjoy playing hockey, snowboarding, playing the drums, or playing XBOX. I'm a bit of a technology freak when it comes to audio / video and, although I don’'t have the bank for it, am constantly battling to put together a nice little home theater with constant upgrades. I am currently very proud of my setup containing a 52 inch Samsung television with Yamaha surround sound, up-converting DVD player, HD cable box, and of course, XBOX. I also love music. Throughout my life I have played in school band, stage band, jazz band, marching band, and various little projects with friends. At the present time, the drums are just a hobby for me, but perhaps something more some day, probably not though. I've come a long way when it comes to snowboarding and am proud of the level I am currently at. The only disappointment would be that in Buffalo, I was able to snowboard about 2 – 3 times a month in the winter and I don't go quite as much anymore. I do what I can though.
And that's me in a nutshell, how did I get in this crazy nutshell??
Survey Questions:
If you could be any TV Character, who would it be and why? Jason Bourne. Although he leads a very conflicted life, he's a trained killing machine (I'm almost there, just a few days of training left). I understand the Bourne trilogy is a movie and not a TV show, however, I own all three movies and I happen to watch them on my TV, which makes him a 'TV Character' in my eyes.
Who was your most influential teacher and why? My drum teacher from high school was one of the most down to earth people I have ever met. He obviously taught me how to play the drums but also how to keep your priorities straight.
What piece of technology can you not live without? My car and my iPod. The car is obvious and the iPod comes with me to work, in the car, snowboarding, and to the gym. I'm not sure what I would do without her.
If you weren't a Motivator, what would you be? If I were not a Motivator, I would probably be an airplane pilot. I love to fly and would love to do it as a profession. If only they could cut down those flight hours and training necessary to become a commercial pilot and just trust me, I know how, I've played all the flight simulators, training complete, now let me in.
Which is the better unofficial holiday - St. Patrick's Day or Cinco de Mayo? St. Patrick's Day. The beers are better because they come from experience. The food is always better from a chef who is ... let's say plump. I'm not sure how to word it, but apply that theory to St. Patrick's day, drinking, and drunk Irish people, then divide by the square root of 7. Need I say more?
What was your favorite non work encounter with Promotional Products? I'm not sure I could pick a 'favorite' experience because lets face it, they're all so much fun when you involve promotional items right? I've always been a fan of the beer glasses with the beer logo printed on them. It's smart advertising, directly to the target demographic.
Who had the better comeback - New Kids on the Block or the Spice Girls? Did either of them ever have a 'comeback' per se? Or was it merely the result of people's infatuation with terrible music manifesting itself in the form of a few unwise CD purchases?
What was your favorite subject in school? Earth Science, Computer Science, and Physics.
What is your favorite season? I like winter and summer equally and for different reasons. I love the winter because I love to snowboard. I like the summer because one of the best parts about living on Long Island is the beaches. I also enjoy playing outdoor sports in the summer months.
Best song to karaoke? Any song that doesn't have words. People get paid to sing, those people are not you, leave it to the professionals... please... for the sake of everyone else in the bar.
